Harvest Madonnari Festival
Photography by O.T. Holen
Chroma Projects presented the first Harvest Madonnari Festival and art competition on Saturday, October 22nd on the Downtown Mall. The festival is inspired by the 16th Century i madonnari tradition of street artists recreating famous images of the Madonna in chalk on the stone piazzas surrounding the churches in Italy. In conjunction with Chroma’s October show Farm Use - a collaboration with the Piedmont Environmental Council emphasizing sustainable agriculture and local food growers and venders -22 artists re-interpreted a master work of art in chalk that depicted images of farming. Our Judges C’ville Mayor, Dave Norris; PCA Exec. Director, Maggie Guggenheimer; PEC Director of Special Projects Melissa Wiley selected the 6 awards below. Congratulations to all the exceptional artists who contributed to this fundraiser for the PCA and PEC. Thanks to our wonderful sponsors who made this event possible: DBAC, Locally Charlottesville, Charlottesville Welcome Book, Orzo, Whole Foods Market, Blue Moon Diner, Relay Foods and Frontrunner Signs. And a very special thank you to Chroma's intern Holly Albertson, who oversaw this festival as the event coordinator, and did a perfect job!
