Wave About to Break
The ocean is never far from my thoughts and is constantly in my dreams. It can be ruthless and it can be supremely benign. I like to paint all of the moods of the sea. Having grown up near the water, I feel that it is an inherent part of my consciousness. My paintings are about both the sublime and violent aspects of nature, particularly as these qualities are revealed in the relationship of water to sky. I portray both the impact of the storm, and the tranquility of the calm before and afterwards; the eye-dead calm of the hurricane; the breathless darkening approach of a thunderstorm across the water. A few years ago, while watching an approaching storm I saw several distinct, drawn out flashes of emerald green periodically illuminating the sky. I was so engrossed by this phenomena that I forgot about the storm until it had overtaken me. It was violent, loud, terrifying and unbelievably gorgeous at once. I hope for my paintings to convey some of that inspiring sensation: nature's grandeur, violence and stillness, the beauty and spectacle of both the fury and the calm.
